This is an article that appeared in the York Daily Record on August 14, 2003

“Crack-down to be made on sneakers thrown over power lines YORK, Pa. (AP) City and power company officials are planning to crack down on sneakers tied together and hung over power lines.

Why people throw sneakers over power lines is unclear, but some people believe they are used to identify a place where illegal drugs are sold, or to mark a gang's territory.

"Whether it's a myth or not, if people believe (shoes mean drugs for sale), it suggests that there's certain activity going on in that community," said Ernie Waters, a spokesman for the electric utility Met-Ed. Waters said once city officials alert Met-Ed to the locations of shoes on power lines, Met-Ed employees will remove them.”

Commentary

We have all seen sneakers hanging over telephone and power lines.   We have all wondered why.   I feel that this article simply skims over the most important information. What do these shoes mean?

It's easy to sit back and surmise what the meanings COULD be from behind your desk, however a bit of actual investigation would prove helpful in the fight against these horrible crimes committed against innocent shoes.

My crack team of investigators has gone deep undercover to reveal the true story behind the hanging of shoes.   What they found was a miriad of meanings.   It seems that the type of shoe and it's size play a big role in determining the meaning of the hanging.

Since the meanings of these hanging shoes is so diverse, we have assembled a sort of dictionary. Some of the shoes have histories as old as telephones themselves. We hope that our hard work will have a positive effect on the communities so deeply affected by these shoe hangings.

High Heel Shoes
Contrary to popular belief, this does not indicate prostitution. This actually indicates the presence of a VFW, Ballroom or other "Older American" establishment with dancing and alchohol. It seems to be a holdover from prohibition.
